Elizabeth Cady Stanton s Declaration Of Sentiments

My paper will include Elizabeth Cady Stanton and what made her set out to start the Women s Rights Movement with her friend Susan B Anthony. Elizabeth became an early leader for the women s rights movements, writing the â€Å"Declaration of Sentiments† as a sign for equal rights for women.In every soul there is bound up some truth and some error, and each gives to the world of thought what no other one possesses.—Cousin. Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on November 12, 1815 in Johnstown New York. She was eight of eleven children, six of her siblings died. Her father was a Federalist attorney. Elizabeth would read the law with her father but, she wasn t allowed to practice because of course she was a women. â€Å"She was drawn to the abolitionist, temperance, and women s rights movements through visits to the home of her cousin†, -Gerrit Smith. In 1840, Elizabeth went to the World Anti Slavery Convention that was being taken place in London. She attended it with Lucretia Mott, who is a outspoken Quaker abolitionist. Lucretia Mott was â€Å"one of the leading voices of the abolitionist and feminist movements of her time†. She was raised in a Quaker household. Elizabeth then made the â€Å"Declaration of Rights and Sentiments†, which she modeled after the â€Å"Declaration of Independence†. â€Å"The growth for the first Woman’s Rights Convention was put in 1840, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton met Lucretia Mott at the World Anti Slavery Convention in London†, the conference that would not seat Mott and other women delegates because they were of course women. â€Å"Stanton felt the task of drawing up the Declaration of Sentiments that would define the meeting, taking the declaration of independence as her guide Stanton then would just go on how all men and women are created equal and then she went on to list eighteen injuries and usurpations on the part of men to women†. The Experience of African-Americans and Native Americans With School Within the history of America, we’ve had discrimination and different approaches to how we interact with the other ethnic group, and how these ethic group were educated within our country. This country that is America sometimes gave these ethnic groups an education to the bare minimum, so that the â€Å"real† citizens. Or the white citizens who were privileged enough to be born with white skin could succeed within their society, and to triumph over other less fortunate citizens. Summary In his article, Get-Tough Policy on Chinese Tires Falls Flat, John Bussey sheds some light on to the tariff that the U. S. enacted in 2009 on Chinese tire imports. The tariff was meant to limit the import of passenger and light-truck tires and help give a boost to manufacturers and job creation in the U. S. As many of the opponents of the tariff point out, it has not added any substantial amount of jobs in the industry but has instead lead to higher prices due to the price of the tariff being passed down to the consumer. In the first year the number of imports from China dropped nearly 35% but in reality it didn’t increase manufacturing here in the U. S. , instead the business moved to Indonesia, Thailand, and Mexico. One tire shop owner argues that prices have also increased for the U. S. made tire as well due to those manufacturers using the cover of the tariff to raise their prices across the board. c. Discussion The U. S. International Trade Commission agreed with the complaint against China that was filed by the United Steelworkers union and recommended the tariff. The ITC was created to help stimulate economic opportunities for U. S. businesses which I am sure that they felt they were doing when they enacted this tariff but it has not worked and needs to be carefully thought thru before any extension. The prices of the tires have increased and no substantial amount of jobs has been added that can be tied back to the enactment of the tariff. The tires being imported from China were primarily lower-cost tires and U. S. manufacturers tend to focus more the higher-profit tires that don’t directly compete with the imports from China. Why try to block the trade of something that is not directly competing with the bulk of your business anyway? Some people are always going to want to buy cheaper things and blocking it does not make them want the more expensive thing. The consumer will look for something else similar in price and if you do not provide it in that price range they will find it somewhere else just as they did in Indonesia, Thailand, and Mexico. d. Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. In January 2007, J. Lee Whittington presented the lecture on â€Å"Leadership legacy†, at a video tutoring session at University of Dallas. Leadership is an intentional influence. Leadership is the ability to successfully integrate and maximize available resources for achieving organizational or societal goals. There are different styles of leadership but great leadership depends on vision, motive, and involvement of people in decision making process. J. Lee’s leadership style consists of a leader who inspires followers to share a common vision, encourages people to achieve the vision, and provides necessary resources for the development of personal potential. In general, this leadership style is more than the fulfillment of self-interest or provision of rewards. On the other hand, looking at my government’s leadership style, leadership is more like fulfillment of self-interest and does not share common vision. Lee’s style of leadership sees a leader’s motive as outristic, where the motive of a leader is to use his power for the betterment of an organization or help the people to succeed. This kind of leadership motive helps building healthy inter-dependence relationship rather than dependent relationship. Here, the goal of the leadership is to prepare others to lead independently. In government leadership style, which is more like an egotistic motive pattern; a leader uses his power to promote himself. Here, a leader uses relations to advance him. This kind of leadership motive builds dependent relationship and treats people as a servant. Egotistic motive is all about one’s personal achievement. Hence, leadership, who uses outristic motive, helps in leading the people to groom them and to make them autonomous, independent, and wiser, so they can reach their full potential. In J. Lee’s style of leadership, although a leader will make the final decision, but he or she invites other members of the team to contribute to the decision-making process. By doing this, team members feel in control of their own destiny, so they are motivated by more than just a financial reward to work hard. Here, the subordinates have the right to voice out their ideas and thoughts, which they think would be helpful for the leader in making the final decision. On the other hand, in government leadership style, a leader exerts high levels of power over his or her team members. People within the team are given few opportunities for making suggestions, even if these are in the teams interest. Also, the teams output does not benefit from the creativity and experience of all team members, so many of the benefits of teamwork are lost. As participation takes time, J. Lee’s style can lead to things happening more slowly than government leadership style approach, but often the end result is better. It can be most suitable where team working is essential, and where quality is more important than speed to productivity. In conclusion, great leadership depends on vision, motive, and involvement of people in decision making process.
